I don't know about you, but it seemed Christmas was quite the whirlwind for us this year! Beforehand we were crazy busy with Christmas parties and projects in addition to the usual stuff like YW, visiting teaching, etc. All in pleasantly cool weather. Then we left for Christmas break.

We spent the first four days of our trip with my family just outside of St. George in a beautiful place called Diamond Valley. We enjoyed four-wheeling, hiking, fishing, and catching up on episodes of "Wipeout!" and "Love it or List it". We had some yummy yummy food and the kids loved getting to open presents with their uncles and Oma and Opa.

The next day we headed out for southern Arizona, where Robert is from. That is where we spent the last part of our trip. There were tons of cousins to play with and Daddy spent every minute soaking up the fun to be had on the farm. Motorcycles, paintballing, shooting guns, etc. We got a few projects done for Grandma and Grandpa like finishing the painting on the outside of the house and welding and painting covers for the window wells. And we all enjoyed a second, mini Christmas exchanging presents with siblings, cousins, and grandparents.

Then the big drive home. It was the longest day of my life. Or at least felt like it. We started at 4 am and did not get home until after 9 pm. That's 17 hours of traveling in a small car with two children. But we made it, thanks to key stops like Cabella's to see the fish. And once we got home, the kids got to have another mini Christmas opening presents from each other and the gifts Santa wasn't able to fit in the sleigh for Utah and Arizona.

Now we are home and recovering from it all. The day after we got back, we had Robert's cousin and her family come stay for about 24 hours to bring a daughter back up to BYU-Idaho. What a whirlwind! Eight people in to stay and back out again!

So this week will hopefully remain low-key. All of us are going through detox from having so much family around to talk to, help out with the kids, and to play with, hold, and give attention. That's always hard for my kids. Hope your holidays were great and your week nice and calm :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-32971588157787638682012-12-16T15:34:00.001-08:002012-12-16T15:34:03.467-08:00ProcrastinationSo it's been a few weeks and I still haven't done anything about it. There is just so much going on these days, posting pictures has fallen by the wayside.

These last couple weeks we've just been scurrying around doing the things you do at Christmastime: shopping, Christmas parties, more shopping, tithing settlement, and YW. Robert has been spending his extra time off work finishing the garage so it has more outlets and lights and will be insulated and sheetrocked. Yay!!

Sam had a great time at his preschool's Christmas party. Although he nearly missed it thanks to Amy sharing her pink eye. But both were over that very quick and we are hoping no other yuckies come to visit our house.

Tomorrow night Robert and I get to enjoy a nice meal away from the kiddos for his work's Christmas party.

This week there's no preschool (dang, what I am I going to do?!), so hopefully we can come up with some fun activities to keep the kiddos entertained and mommy from going crazy while we finish up a few last-minute Christmas gifts and get packing for our big trip!

We leave Friday morning for my parents' house just outside of St. George where we will stay until the day after Christmas and then head down to the warm country of Arizona. We will probably be coming back around January 2nd, so a nice, long trip. So excited!! Hope you all have a great week making your last-minute preparations for the holidays!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-40984839018423545382012-12-02T18:33:00.004-08:002012-12-02T18:33:56.537-08:00Thanksgiving WeekOk, so I just ran in to a problem my friend just did where Blogger is telling me I have no more space. So while I try to figure out what to do about the issue, I will just have to write about our adventures and add the pictures later.
Thanksgiving week was crazy busy, but of course loads of fun. My sister and her family came from Washington to visit us and her husband's family that live here. They didn't stay with us because we already had Robert's family coming to stay, but we enjoyed the time we were able to spend with them and especially getting to meet the newest member of the family, Eliza, who was just six weeks old! Amy especially loved the baby and asked to hold her several times. In an effort to spend just a little more time together, they came over on Wednesday to help me with what has become my annual pie-making marathon. This year it was scaled back a titch to just 12 pies instead of adding on to last years' 19. It was great fun working together to get them all made!!
That afternoon, Robert's parents and little sister came into town from Arizona and were able to stay until Sunday. The day of the big feast arrived and despite my anxiety of trying to fit so many people into my small living room, everything worked out well. We borrowed an extra 8 foot table from a friend to add to ours and we were able to fit all 18 (later 19) people relatively well. The food was fabulous with two turkeys and loads of side dishes that everyone helped contribute to. We spent the rest of the day chatting, cleaning up, eating pies and more food, and racing around the neighborhood on the go-carts (belong to Robert's friend, not us).
Friday was fairly laid back. In the morning the adults and Sam went to an indoor trampoline place called iJump while Amy and I stayed home and made mini ice cream cakes (in cupcake form) for the celebration later that night. Then in the afternoon, the adults joined up with adults from the Potter clan to go shooting. That night we celebrated three Skousen birthdays that are all within the Thanksgiving week: Kurtis (little brother), Mark (Dad), and Shanna (little sister).
Saturday was a great day because that is the day Kurtis went through the temple to take out his own endowments. We were able to leave the kiddos with Shanna (such a relief to not have to find a babysitter, let me tell you!) and went to the Rexburg Temple for the event and then all met up at Aunt Elaine's home in Idaho Falls for a wonderful dinner.
And no week would be complete without a little excitement. Thankfully ours only consisted of the power going out during sacrament meeting. It was so great to just finish sacrament and then go home! And with all the craziness I really hadn't done that great of a job preparing my YW lesson, so I was able to work on it more this week and give it today! That afternoon we said goodbye to the Skousens until Christmas.
But of course the craziness couldn't end there. On Monday and Tuesday I spent running around getting things put together for our Evening of Excellence for Young Women's on Tuesday night. After that I could breathe a little bit. But it has seriously taken me the entire week to recouperate from it all!
But yesterday Robert and I were able to leave the kids with Jake and Stacey to get the Christmas shopping done. And we are seriously done except for a small trip I'm making with just me and Sam to let him pick out a present for Amy. It was great to get it done so easily this year! I contribute most of that to #1: really limiting ourselves to a number of gifts instead of a dollar amount and #2: to researching and thinking ahead of time of what the kids would really enjoy to have as a guide for when we were out among all the millions of toys available.
So here is to this upcoming week of working on some simple projects and planning out the goodies we will be making for friends and family in the area. Hope your holidays are going smoothly!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-33968262590355423952012-11-12T11:00:00.001-08:002012-11-12T11:00:40.369-08:00Camera MIA

So I've been wanting to post about our quick day trip to Utah for a while, but our camera has been MIA and what good is a post without pictures, right? :) And these were definitely worth waiting for! We decided to take a trip to Utah for mainly two reasons: check out some couches and find an upright freezer. We left around 9:30 and had a pretty good drive down. Looked at the freezer we had found and liked it, but we needed to see what the deal was with the couches on whether it would be worth it to come back for it with the truck.

After the freezer, we took the kiddos to Cabela's to see the giant fish they have there. This is seriously the largest fish tank outside of a zoo/aquarium you are ever going to find! And the best part? It's free!! Amy had a great time checking out the fish. Sam, on the other hand, was old enough this time to be scared that the fish were going to eat him.

But with Daddy around, it was ok :)
And looking at the stuffed animals, which aren't as cool as the gigantic fish, but still worth lookin'. And in case you were wondering, the couches didn't work out, which means we aren't going back for the freezer, either. Bummer. But, we did find a campchef for $63 at the Bargain Cave at Cabela's and we got to visit Auntie Candace and Kinley for a little while before heading back home. It was a long day, but successful and fun to spend time together as a family.

Then this last weekend, my great sister-in-law came down from Rexburg to tend the kiddos so I could go to a baby shower and then to a super Saturday for my old ward where I had signed up to do some quiet books for the kids and I learned how to fold these fun little things. It takes some time, but I think they are pretty awesome looking!! This week we are keeping busy with preschool, Young Womens, visiting teaching, and getting ready for Thanksgiving and Robert's family coming to visit. I'm excited to host the big dinner at my home this year, although I am ever so grateful I don't have to do it all myself (14 people for the big meal - ack!!)!! Stacey (SIL in Rexburg) and I have been plotting meals, activities, and table decorations - it's going to be a (crazy) blast!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-29206172417762009012012-11-01T16:37:00.003-07:002012-11-01T16:37:46.882-07:00Halloween 2012

Well, ours was a good Halloween this year. Filled with plenty of dressing up, pumpkin carving, and of course, treats! Here is a pic of our pumpkins we carved Sunday night with Uncle Kurtis and the gang. The order from left to right is Amy, Sam, Robert, mine. I had seen on Pinterest an idea to paint the outside of the pumpkins black. I think it turned out cool. I think next year we might try what our neighbors did and simply paint the pumpkins instead of carving them. We'll see. We also tried using glow sticks to light them this year. If you get the big stick ones they work pretty well, but the ones for bracelets aren't quite enough. So next year we will fiddle around with it more.

Here's Sam in his Spiderman costume. Thanks so much to my parents for giving us my little brothers' costume all we had to get him was the face paint since no masks were allowed at preschool. He was so excited for his preschool Halloween party and had a great time!
Here are both kiddos waiting to go trunk-or-treating. We also got to go to the Halloween storytime at the library. They had a "pumpkin patch" they went through and then got spider suckers at the end :)

And a sweet smile from Miss Amy at the trunk-or-treat. She was Snow White this year with a tutu I had seen online and thought was adorable! I had bought black hair spraypaint, but just didn't feel like it was worth the mess/risk/effort this year. I also decided at the last second to make myself a costume since I was supposed to help serve the apple cider with my Beehives (but nope, no pics of it). I opted for a ghost costume so that way no matter where I am in life (pregnant, not, etc) it will work. And it can be as simple or as involved as I want it to. I tried the hair spraypaint on myself for the first time ever (pinkish/purple) - it was kinda fun to go crazy with it! Hope you all had a fun Halloween, too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-38908190458659801332012-10-22T16:35:00.002-07:002012-10-22T16:35:17.000-07:00October 2012 (most of it)I know. It has been a REALLY long time since I last posted. Apparently our life is quite eventful and once you get a little behind, it seems daunting to catch up and so you put it off for just a bit longer until before you know it, three weeks have gone by without a word. But I think most of you are friends with me on FB and so have seen news of our life, as well as pictures. I don't have a single picture to post on here from our camera, either. Well, let's see....

The second week of October didn't have a lot. More preschool, lunch with friends to celebrate my birthday late. Trying salsa for the first time with my canning buddy thanks to a friend in my ward giving me all the tomatoes and onions left in her garden. Then had lunch with another friend at the end of the week. Also during this week much anticipation was to be had because our ward had been split. It was a sad day. We were ripped from our old ward and paired up with others that had been split off from another ward to make a completely new ward. Which means many, many new callings. It was a tense week waiting for that unknown number to show up on the caller ID. Both Robert and I got the call. His was to be a Sunday school teacher for the 16 and 17 year olds. Mine was to be the Beehive advisor. To be honest, I was relieved. I really enjoyed being with the YW and let's face it - there are MANY other less-than-ideal callings out there. So we are adjusting to the new way of things, but one major good thing about this new ward stuff is our good friends the Potters are now in our ward - yay!!!

The second week of October was a tough one. Robert had his tonsils out Wednesday and thank goodness for my sister-in-law. We had arranged for a YW in our ward who is doing college classes from home to come babysit the kids. But when we got to the hospital and as the proceedings took place, we realized it was going to be MUCH longer than we had told the babysitter and she had a class to be to. So Stacey saved the day and drove down to be with the kids as long as we needed her and also made us dinner. The next few days were rough. I was in YW mtgs, rushing to get kids, taking Robert back to the hospital when he started bleeding and we couldn't get it to stop, and then my older sister was sealed in the temple on Saturday. Since Robert wasn't doing well, we forewent our planned day trip to look at sectionals and Suburbans and I drove down and back that afternoon. It has been one heck of a week, let me tell ya!

And to round it off nice and evenly, I woke up to get me and the two kids ready to go to 9:00 church by myself and was greeted with Amy's bed full of throw-up and her diaper full of diarrhea. Left her at home with Robert, took Sam with me to church. He. Was. Awful. Of course. I told myself we would just stay long enough to take the sacrament and then go home. And then he calmed down. Of course. Did I forget to mention I had to teach YW on Sunday, too? Let's just say I am ready for a new week and am bound and determined to be more prepared and to get to bed early EVERY night because you just never know when your four-year-old will suddenly decide that naps are no more. Dang it!

Hope you have a great week - I'll have to let you know about mine :)
So, I have absolutely no pictures from this week, so I will share the pictures I have from YW almost two weeks ago. We knew that there was a big change coming up, so we decided to dispense with the activity to teach the girls how to use lds.org and just have a fun night with treats and Minute-to-Win-it games. The game I came up with is you put a baseball in the end of a pair of tights, put it on your head, and have to use the ball in the end to knock over a line of water bottles. It was quite fun!

We all had a blast that night just enjoying each other's company one last time. Turns out they took two wards and redid the boundaries so now it is three wards. We are part of the new ward, so I have lost a great number of friends and YW. But on the plus side, we kept some of my favorites (shh, don't tell!) and now our best friends, the Potters, are in our ward! But with a new ward comes new callings, so we are hesitant to answer our phones now :)
In other news, it was my birthday this week! Yay! The actual day was pretty typical, Sam went to preschool and the kids and I just sort of hung out. I worked on Amy's tutu and headband for Halloween and was able to get it finished, which was fun to do something crafty, finish, and have it turn out cute! That evening Aunt Stacey came down from Rexburg to watch the kiddos so I could go to YW and then Girl's Night Out (GNO) right afterward. GNO is something some ladies in my ward started and they go out on the first Tuesday of each month late in the evening to a restaurant (different each month) to just sit and chat. It was so fun that this fell on my birthday and we went to Red Robin per my request so I could get my free dinner and sundae. It was a late night, but a good way to end my day.

Bridgette + Arliee

Then the next day my best friend brought over my birthday cake. It was a layered ice cream cake with Oreos, hot fudge sauce, and raspberries - so yum!
Then the rest of this week was just kinda blah. Sam woke up in the middle of the night throwing up and diarrhea on Wednesday night. Then Thursday night Amy had the same thing. So Thursday I had to keep Sam home from preschool, which meant I had to cancel my trip to the temple I was going to do while Sam was in preschool. But he didn't throw up again, so we were still able to go over to the Potter's to can pears as planned. We spent 7 hours canning pears. Then I threw the kids in the car so we could rush to IF to get my sewing machine back from being serviced (a birthday present and SOOO nice!). And Uncle Kurtis' mission call had come in the mail that day, so he and Jake and Stacey came down to open it and have some ice cream cake with us.
Friday was just a kind of hang-out day since both kids had been sick and Mommy felt like a walking zombie from being up half the night three nights in a row. Today I will do my best to listen to conference (while I work on a sewing project of course!) while the kids play/destroy the house. Tomorrow we have big plans for the Rexburgers (Jake, Stacey, Kurtis) to come down to watch conference with us and enjoy lots of good food. What are conference and family for anyway? :) Hope you all have a great weekend enjoying conference in whatever way is best for you! :)
The other night after the kids were in their jammies, they kept being so silly and doing little dances, I decided to take a video and share so those who don't live close can see how big Amy is getting. This last week has been a tough one for our family. Above is a picture of my new large mirror for the front room I talked about finding in Washington. The picture doesn't really do it justice, but so you get an idea.

The day after I got back, I went to check on prices for canning items and my friend asked if I could get her some corn. I ended up getting corn for us as well so we could get it a little cheaper and did 5 dozen ears of corn and three batches of cookies in between. It was a long, messy process, but got it all done and now my freezers are filled to capacity. Hopefully Robert will find some time to go down and get our new freezer soon!

I tried a new method for my corn this year, though. I baked it in the husks in the oven. It was so much simpler because you cut off the large end and then slip the corn out of the husk and then you are ready to cut the kernels off! I would recommend it to anyone who freezes corn! So after that, I got hit hard with some sort of illness that I am still fighting 5 days later. It changes each day, so I think I am about to get better, and then I have something else. But I have to get better fast because on the docket for this week is one last fun YW activity of Mintue To Win It games before the wards split, canning peaches and hopefully pears, turning plum juice into plum jelly, and the Primary Program on Sunday.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-32786416424260360722012-09-18T16:44:00.001-07:002012-09-18T16:44:08.346-07:00Potter Week

This last week we made our annual trip to Washington to visit my older sister and her family. We love doing girly stuff with "the girls" when we go & look forward to this trip each year while Daddy works long hours for harvest season. This year we made our trip a little earlier than usual because my sister is having baby #6 and we didn't want to stress her out, so we came 4 weeks before the due date to help get ready for baby.
Some of the usual things we do when Auntie Christine comes to visit are painting nails, doing each girl's hair (4 of them) each day, watching movies, hitting up the local park, etc. But a few new things were added to the agenda this year. We tried making our own lip gloss and using clay you bake in the oven to make key chains. The lip gloss was a big hit, but we left the key chains until THE VERY LAST SECOND, so those didn't quite turn out because we were so rushed, but I think we all had fun attempting it at the very least.
Here we have pictures from our day at the local park where we enjoyed a picnic lunch. Don't ask me where the pictures are from everything else we did, but just take my word for it that we had a blast!!
My sister and I were also able to get out and sort through the baby clothes which is always fun. And my brother-in-law volunteered to watch all seven kids so my sister and I could head out to do some shopping kid-free. That was soo amazing! We went to a place called Craft Warehouse first. Need I say more?! This place was huge and awesome!! They had so many things and ideas, it was so fun to just browse and talk about the different ideas we saw. My sister was kind of wanting a new nursing cover, one that was large and kind of cutesy, so we found her some adorable purple and teal fabrics to make a reversible one. I also found two really cute fabrics that I just bought (they were only $4/yd) for some project in the future, be it a nursing cover, carseat canopy, or something else. They were just too cute together to pass up. Then we hit the big jackpot for the day. I found a huge (2 feet by 3 feet) framed mirror that has a really neat design in the frame in a pewter-ish finish. And the best part? It was 50% off! So I made my first major house decoration purchase. My plan is to hang it in the front room with a large shelf below it and then various decor items on the shelf that will be reflected in the mirror. I think it will be super cool........when I can get it all together. I have some inspiration, so we will just wait for the funds and time to follow.
This trip was also really great because I was able to stop and see two different really good friends on our way. One set we hadn't seen in almost two years and the other it has been at least six months. These are both dear friends from nursing school and both have kids my kids could play with. The friend we stopped to see on the way home we actually spent the night and part of the next day with, so we took the kids to play at a really awesome park after we mommies had our fun looking around Hobby Lobby. That place is dangerous!! And before heading out, I stopped to shop at the factory outlet with the kids getting stocked up on great clothes from Osh Kosh B'Gosh and Carters. I was hoping to find something for me at Dress Barn, but no such luck this time.
So, all in all it was a fabulous trip! We were so sad to leave as it was shorter than usual thanks to Sam being in preschool now, but it was enough to just see our family again. Things like that are important. It is good for us to get away and have something to distract us from how much Daddy is working and it is also a relief for Robert to not stress about how much he is gone from us and just focus on the job. I think he also secretly enjoys five days of bachelorhood, but that's just me ;)
So that's all about our last week. The kids did awesome on the drive there. The drive back was a little tougher, but still really good. Today we've been winding up for more errands, YW stuff, preschool, and canning season. Started it off with freezing 5 dozen ears of corn - yum! And for those of you who are skeptical of cooking your corn in the husk in the oven, it really does work!! And I feel like it saves so much time! If you have no idea what I am talking about and want to know more, just give me call and I'll convert you! :)
Again it has been a busy week for us here in Idaho, so we are playing catch up. Monday morning we picked up Grandma and Uncle Kurtis from the airport. Daddy was able to take most of the day off and so we introduced Uncle Kurty to the Eastern Idaho State Fair and all that it has to offer (mainly the good food)

Tuesday was Sam's first day of preschool. He was excited, just not about me taking his picture, so we got him started with a picture with Uncle Kurtis since it was almost his first day of school, too. Sam is in preschool three mornings a week now (TWT) and is enjoying it lots so far.
Amy has really bonded with Kurtis and it is so sweet to see how she loves her uncle. Lately this little gal has been getting really sleepy around 11, so we try and hold her off until lunchtime and then she can have a nice long nap after, but as you can see she doesn't always make it.

Then a friend of mine I went to nursing school with is expecting her first baby and so I offered to do the cupcakes for her baby shower (her older sister is in YW with me and was hosting the shower). The theme was sports and so we did Devilishly Good chocolate football cupcakes and Lemon Lover's White Chocolate baseball cupcakes (mini M&M's for the stitches for those of you who were wondering) Very fun!!

And then for her baby gift I made a gathered carseat canopy/cover thingy. Her baby is due the first week of November so I thought this would be highly useful. A friend of mine and her mom came up with this idea to gather the bottom and top of the canopy with elastic so that when the wind blows the blanket doesn't flap around, but it attaches to the handle so it's also not right next to the baby's face. I love the idea and am saving it for a project to do for my next bundle of joy.
The colors are kinda random, but I found the grey dotted fabric and loved it, but it was hard to find anything that went with it without it being too bland. So I decided to go bold instead.
We also moved Jake and Stacey back to Rexburg this week - so fun!! It is going to be great having family back close again to do dinners and fun stuff with!! We ended the week with one last trip to the state fair. Here is a picture of my sugar flowers which did win first place, but only because I was the only contender in my category. But I got some good feedback from the judges, learned alot from the two professional entries, and have some great ideas for next year's entry. And I can't lie, it is fun to have that big, blue ribbon to show for all my hours of work!
Some of the food we tried this year included: Prime Steer burgers (always a must), Foot long corndogs, Inside out burgers, Indian tacos, Corn on the cob, Tiger ears (another must), Funnel cake, giant Cinnamon rolls, and last but not least, Reed's dairy ice cream!! Ahhh, the fair. We love it! But it is a really good thing it is only once a year!

So I was just going to do a quick post with these two preview pictures and then post the great pictures with the big reveal, but Blogger wasn't working and I am so excited about my flowers, I'm going to post them anyway and just let you know later how it all pans out.
The theme for the sugar flower entries this year was Fantasy Flowers. So I decided to really play up the colors. It turned out pretty well. I got ALOT of practice. This took me about three solid days of working from morning until late lunch, while the kiddos were napping, and then again when they went to bed (so only stopping for lunch and late afternoon/dinnertime). I am SO glad for it to be done! My fingers have blisters from wrapping so many stems! I forgot to do final counts before putting everything together, but here is what I know: 60 leaves, 5 roses, 10 carnations, 15 mums, 2 lilies (12 petals and 6 leaves), and then not quite sure how many red/black blossoms (I think around 30)

And a top view. Pictures don't do this justice (esp with my crappy camera that can't focus worth a darn), but you get the idea and I hope it does well at the fair. But I have no idea since I've never entered before. But at least I tried and I am excited and proud of my work! Wish me luck as I try to transport it all the way down to Blackfoot (45 mins away) and hope we don't have any misshaps! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-74633709122292952092012-08-25T12:21:00.001-07:002012-08-25T12:23:06.589-07:00Enjoying the Lull

Sorry no posts this week, we really haven't been doing much except enjoying the last of the warm weather and the lull in between things. Robert finished grain harvest, but starts killing potatoes on Monday. At least spud harvest (so the really super long hours) doesn't start for a few weeks yet.

We were able to go visit a friend who had a new baby, play with friends, and last night I took Sam to an outside movie someone in the ward did as an end-of-summer party. They rented a projector and big blow-up screen and watched "The Lorax" (good movie if you haven't seen it). He loved it! Robert stayed home with Amy, which was really good since it was super late (for her) and because of the wind it was quite chilly.

Also this week I finally decided to do an entry for the state fair next week. I will be doing sugar flowers. The theme is fantasy flowers, so I am going to have alot of fun with color - hopefully it will go as planned, though! So that is what the picture above is all about. While Sam went and played with some friends in the ward, I got a start on the many, many leaves I will need to make and I was able to color all of my gumpaste. Now I need to make the bases for the roses, carnations, and mums so they can dry over the weekend and I can get crankin'.

I also am making cupcakes for our ward birthday party tonight and a German chocolate cake for a friend's birthday tomorrow. We get next week and then Grandma and Kurtis come back to visit, Jake and Stacey return for school, and Sam starts preschool. Oh how the time flies!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-16723158323350387942012-08-20T18:41:00.001-07:002012-08-20T18:41:18.799-07:00Something for Kaylie

Our local grocery store had a huge fundraiser to support Primary Children's Medical Center this last Saturday, so we decided to join in. I don't know why, but when I saw the posters for the 5K race, I knew that we needed to do this for Kaylie and that I wanted to do it with my two kids. I know, crazy, right? But we did indeed do it despite the early hour (meaning grumpy kids) and lack of training. We somehow made it to the end with only a few trips running back for Sam for various reasons.

I was able to find us all grey shirts and spent way too much time the night before printing, tracing, cutting, ironing, and painting the "Team Kaylie" onto the back of each of them. But it felt good to do something together for our angel up in heaven and I thought about her alot as I ran. After the race we went home and changed so we could hit up the 25 cent sale at the consignment store in Rexburg. This is such a sweet deal! Every item they have out is a quarter! And this time around I was able to find stuff for all of us and even some for my sister and her kiddos. At 25 cents a pop, why not?!
Then we headed home for lunch and naps (which we all needed desperately). After we got up, we went back to the local grocery store in hopes of being there for the raffle drawing to see if we won any of the cool prizes. Turns out they didn't do it when they said they were going to. But Sam got to throw balls to dunk an employee, get his face painted with a spider and web, and jump in the bouncy house. Then we headed over to the Early Iron car show. It has been the Jefferson County Fair this week and the grand finale is a car show of all sorts of cars, trucks, tractors, bikes, etc. The kids liked it pretty well and we really enjoyed getting a jump start on fair food by enjoying funnel cake topped with strawberries. It was a long, full, fun day! And we ended it the best with a trip to Sam's Club with Daddy for dinner and a new movie ("Hunger Games"!!)
*Sidenote* I did decide at the very last second to enter the "Death by Chocolate" contest that I won last year with my Almost-Too-Much-Chocolate cake. I decided since it was free to enter and I had some cookies left over from Book Group, I would go ahead and try. They were my Ande's Mint Cookies. I think they are to die for. But apparently it is quite difficult to surpass chocolate cake with chocolate cookies or candies because only cake entries won the top awards. Next year I will just do the cake again.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-35210335528212251912012-08-11T16:32:00.002-07:002012-08-11T16:32:31.017-07:00YW Bag

I know, ANOTHER post from me. I've been a little post crazy lately. Oh well. I really wanted to share this with you because I am quite proud of myself. Ever since being called in to the YW, I have struggled to carry everything we need for church in our one bag. So I decided I would solve this problem by making myself a super cute bag just for YW stuff. I found the fabrics fairly easy and they have been sitting down in my craft room for over a month now waiting to be used.
Today being Saturday I had quite alot of time to fill with Daddy working, no swimming lessons, no errands to run and no one to do a playdate with since most people consider it a family day. This morning me and the kids super cleaned the house, which was good because it hasn't been really cleaned since before Girl's Camp. Then, while the kidlets took nice long naps (thanks to both not sleeping well last night) I decided to get to work on my bag. I got my inspiration from a Make-It & Love-It project and our current church bag I won at an auction to support our library. There are a few things that I would like to tweak next time: how to finish the bottom so there is no seam, how to do the squared-off bottom, and figure out how to get the batting and layers of fabric to all stick to each other. But some things turned out really well, too. I was proud of myself for figuring out how to do the pockets on the inside of the bag without seams showing (something I have in the other bag, but the tutorial I was following didn't). And just how it came together was super awesome. I had also found some yellow fabric with tiny white flowers all over it I was going to incorporate, but I just couldn't see how it would fit, so I left it off for now. I'm considering making a fabric flower or something to designate the front from the back and maybe that is where I could use that? A fun and much-needed project to get me back on track!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-65691092612549423882012-08-10T14:11:00.001-07:002012-08-10T14:11:20.909-07:00A Little More

Ok, so here are a few more pictures from adding decor to our house. Another quote in vinyl that I thought would be perfect for the guest bedroom. (and yes, that is a pile of clean sheets sitting on the bed waiting to be put on) The quote is on a mirror from the dollar store, which give it a really cool look (vinyl on a mirror).
Then I wanted to show you how our family wall looks now that we have the new family pictures up along with the new vinyl. If I could just find the right shelves I want for either side, this wall would be complete. Someday.

Then here are a couple pictures of how I did Amy's hair the other day. We have fallen into a bad habit of only doing her hair in two styles. And we only style it every other day (if we don't have anything going on) to give her head a break and to remind me that she really does have hair. And beautiful angel hair, too.

But the other day on Pinterest someone found a post by a lady who had a baby with not alot of hair. Still way more than Amy's, but not enough to do all the fancy, cute things you see out there for little girls. Her post gave me a handful of good ideas to try so I don't get so frustrated. Those front ponys sure were hard and I'm sure her head was sore by the end of the day! And besides the fact that they aren't perfect, I like this look alot! I even had a lady stop me at DI not only to compliment Amy's hair, but also how hard it must have been to do it! So I hope to continue this on of making more of an effort to try new things with Amy's hair to keep it up and out of the way and to find hairstyles that keep ALL the hair in all day (that is our biggest issue with the old hairstyles; by the end of the day only a bit of hair was still in the pony)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-41017201753279874632012-08-08T08:53:00.001-07:002012-08-08T08:53:42.299-07:00More Vinyl Decorating

So these pictures are mainly for my mother-in-law to see how the vinyl we cut turned out in the various spaces. But it's fun to share the little bit of house decorating I do with you guys as well. Up top is the new "Families are forever" because I found a font I liked so much better. It is more swirly and a little thinner, but I love it!

Next is a quote for that large, empty family room downstairs. This vinyl is actually in dark brown, but it's hard to tell in the picture. Don't know what else I am going to do with all of that dead space downstairs. Probably just leave it like I have done everywhere else.

Then the stickers we had gotten from Walmart for our mailbox had faded to black, which doesn't work well with a black mailbox. By luck we had bought a sheet of white outdoor vinyl to do something for a friend of mine, so we used the leftover to make a snazzy new name and address for our mailbox. It looks fabulous!!
And then just a quick picture of the amazing sunset last night as I was out putting the vinyl on the mailbox. The sun was actually quite a bit redder than this, but it still looks super pretty.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-71419504739369478812012-08-06T17:23:00.006-07:002012-08-06T17:23:59.682-07:00Bear World Adventures

We've been to Bear World once before - when Grandma was visiting and we only had Sam. So we decided to use our 50% off cards and make a quick trip before swimming lessons and before Grandma and Uncle Kurtis had to head home. First off is the albino elk - very large head of antlers there.

It was really sad to see them go, but both will be back at the beginning of next month for Uncle Kurtis to start school in Rexburg. And then we will see Grandma and Grandpa in November for Thanksgiving here at our house!! We went straight to swimming lessons, then the free lunch, then errands in Idaho Falls. The poor kids were wiped out (ok, so maybe I was, too). Hope you all have a great week living it up before school starts again!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-81334968682491649002012-08-05T19:59:00.001-07:002012-08-05T20:03:25.753-07:00Crazy Weekend
We have had a crazy busy week/weekend, but that just follows suit with the rest of our summer, doesn't it? We got home from our trip to Utah when we took my brothers home and visited with my parents on Tuesday. Then Thursday Robert's mom and little brother, Kurtis, came to visit. Friday was our anniversary (6 years thank you) and thanks to Grandma being here to babysit and the grain being too green to harvest, we were able to get away for a pretty good dinner at Wingers and finally seeing Avengers.

At the picnic, some of Robert's cousins decided to try an idea they saw of wrapping rubber bands around a watermelon until it explodes. It took so many rubber bands that they had to run to the store to get more, but we eventually saw the thing explode, as you can see above. It was pretty sweet!

I somehow got nominated to make enough cake for the Smith family reunion/picnic so we decided on Lemon Lover's White Chocolate for the birthday cake and a half sheet of German Chocolate to make sure we had enough for the 40+ people. Robert's best friend, Mitch, also had his birthday on Friday, so I also made him a homemade carrot cake. It was cake mania, let me tell you! The picture above is the only one we got of the birthday cake with the gumpaste flowers.

Then today we have just enjoyed the day with Grandma and Uncle Kurtis. Trixie brought the beloved Cricut along and we spent the afternoon cutting vinyl for all sorts of projects. The picture above is the one we were able to put up tonight. It is an amazing quote I found from Elder Uchdorf and goes perfectly with a craft room in my opinion "The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul" Isn't that fabulous?! Anyways, we did a bunch of other ones, too. You want to know what we did?

We did this teeny, tiny one for Kaylie's picture frame on our family wall so it kind of explains things simply and kindly. Then we did a new name/address for our mailbox in white outdoor vinyl. Next we redid the "Families are forever" quote in black for my wall because I found a font I liked alot more (sorry, Ashlee!). We did "Laugh as much as you breathe" in chocolate brown for the family room downstairs. "Embrace each day" in a light purple for my dresser mirror. And then my favorites were two quotes for the guest bedroom and bathroom downstairs. "We can't miss you if you won't leave" in blue and "If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie" in navy. It was alot to do in one day, but it was so fun, too. Tomorrow we are hoping to hit up Bear World with Grandma and Uncle Kurtis before they head out and before we have to head to Rexburg for the start of swimming lessons for everyone. Should be a fun two weeks!
So today we decided to head out to Rexburg to enjoy the splash park. We are really trying to live up the rest of summer and get tons of playtime in with our friends the Potters before they leave for three weeks.
Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best this morning, so the kids only lasted about half an hour in the water before they were too cold. We like to go do water stuff in the morning before the sun gets too intense, but sometimes it hasn't quite warmed up enough, either. Thankfully they were just as happy to simply play with each other on the grass until we had our picnic lunch.

Right after this one, Sam slipped and fell into the water, it was super funny!
And I know the shutter is in the way of this one, but look how cute Amy is trying to say "Hi" to Lily :) She can be such a social butterfly at times and yet so shy at others. Of course later today it got nice and hot, so we will be taking advantage of National Ice Cream Sandwich day with Grandma and Uncle Kurtis coming to visit will be a great end to our day as well!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142161140733317868.post-63546188027109846052012-08-01T14:29:00.000-07:002012-08-01T14:29:22.986-07:00Fishing Bare-handed

Here are a couple more pictures from the stake pioneer celebration when they let the kids catch full-sized trout with their hands in the man-made pond. Up top is Josh's mommy, aka Aunt Julie now, helping Sam catch his fish once he finally decided he wanted to get one (which he ended up being too chicken to try and grab, so Julie got one for him)
So, the week with my brothers was so super fun, and yet crazy, that very few pictures were taken. But let me "sum up" (name that movie Whatcott fam!). First we make some crazy yummy cookies that were Ghirardelli brownie cookies with fluffy caramel cream sandwiched in between. Then on Tuesday we left Amy with a sitter, grabbed some friends that were the same ages as the uncles and headed to iJump where we played dodgeball for nearly the entire hour. Wednesday we went to Rigby Lake for the first time this season. Thursday we went to the library in the morning and then in the afternoon again left Amy with a sitter (poor girl never gets to have any fun) and went to Rexburg Rapids. The few pictures I do have are first from our stake's annual Pioneer Celebration that we went to with our friends, the Potters. (we do everything with these guys!)
We made sure to get there early so the kids could try the catching a fish with your hands. (we missed it last year) All the kiddos had fun, although Sam was too scared of the fish to actually grab any. But thankfully Josh's mommy wasn't afraid of the fish or of getting wet and helped each little kid get a fish, catching one quite large one, too.
Here is the guy dumping the fish into the man-made pond on the grass at the stake center. The older boys caught their own fishes and loved it! Then we did the food thing and ended the night with a screaming, kicking, running-away-from-Mom 4-year-old meltdown and cotton candy.
Then Friday we finished off the week with another visit to Rigby Lake. In between all of this there was plenty of playing games, the Wii, and with toys. Robert had planned on taking the boys fishing Friday night before we left, but it was too windy and too crowded at the lake, so that had to slide.
Then Saturday we headed out around 5 am so we could get to my parents' house around lunchtime. They recently moved to Diamond Valley, which is just outside of St. George. It was so great to get to see my parents again (and my brothers, too of course). These pictures are from our visit to the Pine Valley Chapel a little ways away. This church was built like an upside down ship - so cool!! What's also cool is that it is still being used for church today and thus makes it the building in longest use in the whole church! (I think it was built around 1868?)
*Warning* lots of pictures to follow! I wanted to share with you some of the wonderful pictures we got when we went to do family pictures the week before I left for Girl's Camp. It was Robert's idea to try doing pictures in the potato fields when they are in bloom. If you look close, the blooms are actually a light purple. They were beautiful!! And so everyone knows, the other location was just across the dirt road and is barley, not wheat. Hope you enjoy them as much as we did! These were taken by a lady in our ward and she did a fabulous job - sooo happy!! P.S. I don't know why, but these didn't upload super well, but they were in focus and great shots!
But I will do my best to review everything and if I forget something then forgive me :) So after my little sister and her family left, we just hung out waiting for the storm of people and craziness to come. We had a soccer game or two and I was getting really oriented with things in YW (stake training, presidency mtgs, and major drama keeping me out until 11pm two nights). Then Robert's sister, Lisa, and her family came for a visit. They joined us for church and for the monthly family dinner on Sunday at Robert's aunt's house in IF. Monday we just kinda hung out and chatted and I finally learned how to make ribbon roses (now I just need to go make a hundred or so in order to get it down pat). Then the craziness came. I left for Girl's Camp early Tuesday morning (Eric and Lisa were still visiting until Wednesday morning and then we had Robert's cousin and her family come Wednesday to Friday).
Unfortunately my camera decided to go nuts, so I only have a couple pictures from the first day and that is it!
Day 1: we drove to Lava Hot Springs where we proceeded to float the "calmest and shortest" section of the river. Ended up losing several girls off the tubes and having to be rescued. There were many scrapes, bumps, and bruises. But all in all it was a blast! Then we finished the drive to our campsite and we set up the tents and then had the 8th Ward traditional spaghetti dinner that you eat without utensils. That is what all the pictures are from. We also went on a hike after dark, which was pretty cool.
This girl's dad smashed her face into her plate and she had quite a good time playing it up!
Day 2: Everyone got to enjoy the big 5 mile hike. We drove to some ice caves and then hiked all the way back to camp. It was a beautiful day and the hike wasn't too bad. At the end, though, we were faced with the choice to go up, over, and down a big hill or continue down the road we were on, but go an extra 2 miles. Many of us chose the hill, but it was tough and left many of us sore the next day. The afternoon we spent playing games, chatting, and finally got around to doing camp certification. That night we split the girls into three groups and had them come up with skits using items they were given in a bag. It was quite funny to see what came together and us leaders did one as well reviewing some of the highlights of camp up to that point.
Day 3: the fun day! We went and did the tour at the Minetonka (?) Caves. It was quite chilly and there were lots of cool things to see. Probably the biggest cave I have ever been in. There were 444 stairs in and we walked all of those back out, too. Talk about your workout! At the end, they turned out all of the lights and had the girls (well, I guess us leaders, too) walk a little ways out holding on to the railing, comparing it to holding on to the iron rod. Very cool! Then straight from the caves, we headed over to Bear Lake for three or four hours of water fun. It was great! Some of us washed our hair (or even went as far as to shave legs) and we buried people on the beach. One leader brought a parachute to play with in the water. It was a great time had by all. Then we came back and had yummy dutch oven pizza dinner made for us by the bishopric. We enjoyed some messages from the bishopric and then after dark we had our testimony meeting.
Day 4: We packed up and went home! I was so happy to go to camp, but also VERY happy to see my kids and husband again. It was a hard thing for me to leave them. But we all survived! I now have a very large appreciation for flushing toilets and my own bed.
But coming home from camp wasn't the end of our adventure. Four hours later we were packed up and headed out for Utah. My sister was going through the temple for the first time and all of us were able to be there for her special day. It was awesome! I had never been to the Bountiful Temple and just like all temples, it was beautiful in its own way. We enjoyed time talking with my family and some bowling. We went to sacrament meeting, then packed up and headed home with two extra kids and a new vehicle. I had offered to my parents to have my two younger brothers come stay with us for a week. So this week we are enjoying extra playmates and a luxury minivan to haul four kiddos around in. I'm still fairly certain I don't want one, though! :)
So that's it! I believe we are all caught up on what's been happening around here at the Skousen home. Hope your summers are going great! Sam is almost done with soccer (and even scored a goal in his game last night!) and then we begin swimming lessons for him and for me and Amy!
